Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh has thrown his support behind India head coach Gautam Gambhir after a historic win at Birmingham, saying he should not be criticised.

Gambhir was under heavy pressure following India’s loss in the first Test at Headingly. Despite entering the series as underdogs, the team faced sharp criticism over selection and strategy. However, led by Shubman Gill, India bounced back dominantly, defeating England by 336 runs their first-ever victory at the venue after losing eight previous matches.

The win helped India level the series 1-1 and shifted the momentum heading into the third Test at Lord's.

Yograj Singh Backs Gambhir Amid India’s Series Win and Ongoing Growth

Speaking to ANI, Yograj Singh praised the players' steady growth under Gambhir and said that criticism is unfair, even if India ends up losing the series.

"Indian players are consistently growing and improving their game. We will support them always. We should not speak about Gautam Gambhir because he is doing well. Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Rahul Dravid are giving back to cricket because they have received so much. Even if our team loses the series, we should not demoralise them," said Yograj.

Yograj Singh Confident in Shubman Gill’s Leadership as India Eyes Series Win Under Gambhir

He also expressed confidence in Shubman Gill’s leadership, saying the young captain could lead India into a new era.

"If you lose, you will not be there to explain; if you win, you don't have to explain. We hope that we win the series under the captaincy of Shubman Gill."

So far, India has won four Tests under Gambhir’s tenure, two at home and two overseas. While his white-ball coaching stint has been impressive, the longer format remains a work in progress. With the new World Test Championship cycle just underway, Gambhir’s side holds the edge after two matches.

Meanwhile, England is under pressure and reportedly planning changes to their pace bowling to counter India’s momentum, particularly with Jasprit Bumrah set to return for the Lord’s Test on Thursday, July 11, 2025.
